Methods and Theories of Art chapter 4

This was a hard chapter both to understand and get through. Chapter 4 deals with psychology and perception of art. So it was concerned with certain pyscholanalists and their influence on art history. I definitely understood some and didn’t undestand other things discussed. I did though come up with a few gems that will help me analyse art.

In particular i liked what the feminist writer Laura Mulvey said in her book “Visual pleasure and narrative cinema’ 1975. She basically said that Hollywood cinema gives the viewer only two roles either a a voyeur (to look at the female actor) or to identify with the male hero. What is know as the ‘patriarchal gaze’. This is an interesting concept to apply to much art, particularly classic art. you can see that men are the heroes we must aspire to and women are the objects of our desire. But does that mean that this kind of art is forcing people into specific viewer roles that are not natural to them and why?
